Black Cat Arts consists of two painters: Prema Baughman and Charlotte Puttock. Due to our love for large-scale projects, we explore the potential of working with businesses, communities, and educational institutions. We work as designers, illustrators, drafters, and artists to bring others’ visions to life and transform their spaces for the better.

For this project, we were hired by a cat café to create a mural that features elements of historic Winchester, food products, and various depictions of cats. While the owner desired for us to include aspects of American Folk art, they also wanted us to create a new and fresh perspective on the style; they asked us to create a bright and whimsical composition.
To reference American Folk Art, we included rolling hills and simplistic houses across the mural, emphasizing character over technique. We chose to portray as many cats as possible in a variety of different styles to show a diversity of personalities, including elderly and disabled cats. The client desired a maximalist approach, so we combined playful details with an inviting palette of mint green and berry hues to create a calming yet eccentric and fun atmosphere. The design features a collection of historic buildings, animals such as foxes and horses, hot drinks and baked goods, catnip, apple blossom branches, and sixty-eight cats in total. We truly enjoyed loading the composition with so many details and we are grateful to have worked with Biscuits and Beans.
